Hello, I’ve just come across this site.
Recently I’ve started my career as a college teacher that’s why plagiarism issue is so crucial for me. I used to check the works of my students through Google search only but the amount of material is huge and it takes too much time.
I’ve heard that there are particular Internet services for checking plagiarism but I’m not sure if they are reliable enough. I’d like to get any feedback and opinions on that, this is really vital for me.

I'd rather trust Google, but in this case you may try mydropbox.com. However I don't consider "artificial intellect" to be reliable source for plagiarism check, for me it's the same thing like to use translation programs without editing.
A human should view the outcome to make eventual conclusions.

Hi guys!
Well, I wanted partly to agree with Roger in terms that no piece of software can substitude human in certain things. Sure, checking through Google or using mydropbox.com or turnitin.com services can bring real results. But sometimes your intuition of college teacher works better.

Susy, you're right that intuition of college teacher rules Kiss but intuition plus Google is much more effective.  Cool
I understand those teachers when they are desperate to check large amount of material and want to ease their lives by using software.

My dad is a university professor and the last decade was very stressful for him, because he faced unprecedented plagiarism from students. Sure, there were cases of plagiarism before, but with Internet development plagiarising became very spread among students. Sad
Now he warns his students that any sign of plagirism will be severely punished. Moreover, he uses various programs to check papers. Still, his experience helps him most of all.

Debby, thanks for the idea.
I'm really tired of all that stuff and I think the punishment is the only way. I actually have a couple of students worth excluding for plagiarism and I think this would be a nice example for others.
If student plagiarizes he must face the consequences and he must see that they are for real.

Yeah, experience is helpful in such cases.
I've been a student and several times there was real temptation to plagiarize. To tell you the truth it was not a threat of being punished that kept me from plagiarizing, but rather wish to stay honest and respect to my professors.
I believe that if students respect their professors they will try to be honest to them.

I came up with one more idea for college professors  Wink
In order to prevent students' plagiarism, formulate topics for writing in such a manner that would require their personal opinion. Hopefully, it will be harder to search for such topics in the Internet.

I accidentally discovered that part of my story written 2 months ago is posted on somebody’s website. The person hasn’t asked for permission to post it there and I was not even notified of such action. So I consider it the act of plagiarism. I know about mydropbox.com and turnitin.com but these are for educational institutions and I’m just a writer and I’m not willing to buy a special soft.  Is there any other way to check plagiarisms online?

Many thanks.

Well, as a cheap variant you can simply set up a Google alert www.google.com/alerts  for a sentence and put it in quotes. So Google bot will automatically search for it in web and notify you once this phrase is found.  This method also allows you to find out what people say about your website or blog if you have one. I use it sometimes for reputation watching purposes.

I don't know how it can help to search for plagiarism, but this is very useful tool. I've created alerts on those topics for which I have personal concern.

I don't think that Google alerts are good way to check plagiarism.
When you check plagiarism you need to obtain result ASAP.

Ok, so they are not good for checking plagiarism.
Can anyone explain me the very purpose of those Google alerts?

Specially for u, Iwriter, I went to www.google.com/alerts and brought you this valuable piece of info Grin

"Google Alerts are email updates of the latest relevant Google results (web, news, etc.) based on your choice of query or topic.

Some handy uses of Google Alerts include:

    * monitoring a developing news story
    * keeping current on a competitor or industry
    * getting the latest on a celebrity or event
    * keeping tabs on your favorite sports teams

Create an alert with the form on the right."

Now everything's clear, I suppose?
