Plagiarism issue is one of the hottest ones for freelance writers. We live in the epoch where everything has its price and everything has its owner. Forgive me for such almost anti-globalist-like rhetoric Smiley  Still, the truth is that you can hardly make money being a freelance writer and know not enough about copyright and plagiarism. Any student will tell you that plagiarism is severely punished in universities. Plagiarism beyond universities is punished no less severely and may destroy someone’s reputation and “the guilty one” will frequently have to pay a huge compensation. That is one side.
The other side is that you may find yourself blamed of plagiarism in situations when you honestly consider yourself totally innocent. Why does that happen? It mainly happens when you lack knowledge and information concerning copyright law.
I am positive that any freelance writer should be well aware of copyright law issues. It is great if you can afford consultations from good copyright lawyers. But that’s not common and if you want to protect yourself from either plagiarism or from being blamed in plagiarism you should possess information on that matter.
It's good to start up with US copyright law .
Students know that almost each university has its policy regarding plagiarism. Definitions may be kind of different at different schools. But the central idea is the same. Look at definitions of plagiarism on web sites of universities.
If you want to be a good writer, good research skills are essential. Don’t be lazy to research plagiarism and copyright issues when you start working.
Hope to get feedback  Smiley

Thanks Alan!
I found your intro into plagiarism and copyright issues quite solid and recollected my student years. Well, actually that was not so long ago Wink
Indeed, when you go studying to university you are instructed that any plagiarism in your work will be severely punished. Still, there were guys that tried copying some pieces of work. But with today's technologies it is quite easily tracked.
If you are smart enough you can change sentences and work with text and make it look "yours". But that's pretty much work Wink
I remember one Professor in Sociology who just hated plagiarism in students' works and got so upset when he noted any sign of plagiarism that he just stopped communicating with the student who dared to plagiarize. And that was considered a real disgrace among students.

I came across an interesting site researchcopyright.com which is dedicated to copyright issues. There are even free e-books available.

I believe that plagiarism is crime and sin. And the only difference is how heavy is it  Roll Eyes
