Hi, did anyone cite Wikipedia as a resource? Can it be considered as legitimate source?

Calvin, although wikipedia is indeed helpful when one needs to find information easily presented and up-to-date, it can hardly be considered a really legitimate resource, due to the fact that anyone can edit pages. I would say that wikipedia is great for getting information but not so good for citing it as a resource. Especially if you write some academic paper. Professors want to see respective authors in your bibliography page.

I've never cited wikipedia as a resource. My university professors wouldn't accept it, I believe. Still, I frequently use wikipedia as kinda reference tool when I need to get some basic information on many things.

Rainy is right.
For me Wikipedia is a great and handy source of information. But the fact that anyone can edit information makes it inappropriate for citing because people who will read your work want to see definite and creditable authors.  I often use info from Wikipedia not for citing but for expanding my own knowledge and horizon.  Wink

Debby, in fact it depends on the university or professor. I asked my daughter who is obtaining BA in the university about their rules in regard to Wikipedia citing. And she told me that they are actually not prohibited from citing Wikipedia as a resource. What is more, she told me that one professor used printed materials from Wikipedia in his lectures. Personally I don't think it's good for any professor to use Wikipedia materials in lectures. Professors have to appeal to respected sources.
