As for my personal viewpoint, I think a person should be born with a real inclination to writing for children. That requires a special character, I guess

"You must write for children the same way you write for adults, only better."

When writing for children, you need to first consider what age group you are targeting. Is the book for pre-schoolers? Keep your word count and your sentences short. Keep sentence structure basic (But don't get caught in the "See Dick. See Jane. See Dick and Jane," trap.)

Is your book aimed at 6 - 8 yr olds? You can afford to get a bit more sophisticated with your writing but you still want to keep in mind the average ability and attention span of the age group.

Are you going to be targeting the 9 - 12 group? By this time, reading skills have, presumably, advanced to a fairly high skill level and you can get into more complex plots and storylines. Make sure your theme is something that the pre-teens can relate to.

If your target group is the 13 - 15 year old group, you are pretty much at liberty to go full out with your story structure and plot. Again, just make sure your subject matter is something that does matter to the age group.
