There’s no person in the world that hadn’t been a beginner at some point. That is just for freelance writers as well.
I know that many beginning freelancers face uncertainty when they think of what they should do first to start their freelance career.

Internet added new options in searching information of any kind and information about job opportunities for freelance writers too. That is why the first thing a freelance beginner should do is to surf Internet actively. Online writers’ communities are especially valuable sources of information and communication. For instance, absolutewrite.com is the right place if you seek professional advice and update information on freelance writing issues.

Every beginner should remember that the path to success is often thorny Smiley  At least, every beginner should know that it needs time to pass and efforts to be put until you get weigh as a writer and can demonstrate your portfolio proudly.

There are various techniques on how to promote your writing, etc. and one can find tons of such information in the Internet. But the golden rule is that you should first identify the market you target at and then query the market.

I hope this thread will be developed by users and many new useful links and resources will be included.

If you are a new in freelance writing, probably the first thing you should do is to subscribe for a newsletter writing-world.com at  and get updated information. At this site you can also find numerous articles that may answer lots of your questions.

Thank you, arthter!
Your ideas are helpful indeed. I would also like to see this thread developed and full of interesting information from fellow writers.
I have done some steps towards journalism writing and would like to share a very nice resource poynter.org for those learning how to write.

Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.

Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.
