I've been searching Internet for several days in order to find out how much money a freelance beginner can expect to earn. But the sums vary significantly. I believe that much depends on the particular market you target and of course on your experience and qualifications. For example, writing folks often say that if you can get into copy writing business and stay there, you will benefit a lot. Anyway, that depends. So many things influence the numbers we see on our bank account. I'm curious about others' experience and expectation regarding payment for freelance writing. Thanks Smiley

Hi Sandy.  I'm new to this forum, but I thought I'd add my opinion on this issue.  Of course, as you say, there are certain types of writing gigs that pay more -- such as copywriting.  So, a writer who is setting out to earn the big bucks as a freelancer might be wise to specialize in one of those  higher paying niche areas.  But in general, I think how much a freelance writer makes depends on what his/her goals are and how committed they are to finding work and delivering quality product to their clients.  A big part of earning enough to really pay the bills, for me, has been not settling.  I won't take jobs that pay less than I'm worth, and I've never compromised.  Yet, I have a steady flow of work, and my bills are always paid.  That's always been my goal - to work just enough to support myself, so that I can spend my time enjoying my life.  I know the amount of money I need to make per day, per week, per month, and I work hard to make sure that what I earn averages out to what I need to be making.  If I fall short one week, I pick up the slack the next.  So far, it's been working for me.  I'm not in this business to get rich.  I don't need a six figure income.  But, if a freelance writer's goal is to earn a six figure income, I do think it's possible, if they're willing to commit to that goal.

I noticed most people live ordinary life i.e. they just earn for a living either because they put this goal this or because they cannot afford it now and are lazy enough to achieve higher results in future.  But I have big expectations from my freelance writing activity. I experienced resolute growth last year, this year is not so lucky in terms of revenue but it’s not the reason to slow down freelance writing career.  As times goes by I establish contacts with some people that could be helpful for business purposes in the long term run.

We live only once, why not to try all good things the life has in stock. IMHO  Wink

Angela,
Thanks for your opinion. As I see you have big experience in this area and your blog really provides great job opportunities. I will advise my friends to visit this site.

"how much a freelance writer makes depends on what his/her goals are and how committed they are to finding work and delivering quality product to their clients"

It's true, but it's too general. Prices vary significantly in the web. And sometimes numbers - are best advisers  Wink

Simon,
I'm sure this year will become  successful for you, you have 7 months to prove it!

I guess that if money is the main goal for a freelancer and he is ready to work hard then he may get even more then he expects. The problem is to maintain the balance and spare some time for life.

I guess there is a category of writers for whom writing is life.
I don't think that spending all time on job is the best solution and of course I don't belong to such category

Hi guys,

I am new to this forum and I am really glad to be in the company of so many good writers.

I have a full time software job but writing is my passion and gives me immense pleasure.

I love to write on religion, economy, technology, politics, sports and social issues.

As of now I haven't made any money because I could not find any organisation/website that wants articles on the above areas, but I am trying hard and I keep on writing on things I like to!

I agree that money is also very important but I guess one should write what one enjoys writing.

Talking of money if I can pay off my house rent with the money from freelance writing, I would consider myself a great success! Smiley

However as of now it seems that it is very difficult to earn even a single penny out of freelance writing!! Huh

Especially in the beginning of freelance career it seems very hard to earn money, but actually there are many sites in Web which need freelance writers.
Some of them are discussed on forums and on this forum also.
Economy, technology and social issues are popular themes for freelance writer so I'm sure that soon you will find freelance writer job.  Cheesy

Like in many businesses a freelancer should first earn good reputation. That’s kind of thing you cannot buy for money, steal or get in exchange for something.  You can only earn it by your hard work by meeting tight deadlines and doing your best.  Sarah is right, there are many materials on the web regarding how you can help yourself to become a freelancer.  Despite of this, too much depends on the person. Freelance business is definitely not “how-to-earn-a-million-quickly” scheme.

Hmm.. if you think money is the most important thing in writing, then why don't you try writing for college students. In this market you can find jobs that will allow you to write about religion, technology, politics, etc. Besides, sometimes they pay up to $25/page (e.g. PENCAMP, etc.). Surely, such a job may be contradictory if considered in an ethical context, but still it brings enough money to pay, for instance, your rent or mortgage..
