What do you think about mental illness? From your point of view, how much it can be a barrier for writers? Recently, I found in web a brilliant phrase of one girl from Singapore. I hope you will enjoy it as well. It's not my mental illness; it's what you think of my mental illness. (My response to job application forms about declaring 'disability'.) You can view her livejournal blog at: http://runny.livejournal.com/

Well we know artists, musicians and even scientists who are not completely “normal”. The border between being a genius and crazy is often very thin. And it rarely happens that a fully normal ordinary person can be creative and writing calls for creativity. If a writer is not completely crazy, people may like him

Ashley, I agree that this phrase is brilliant. If the mental illness doesn't impact the quality and quantity of the work - it mustn't be mentioned. Sometimes for people such "disability" may be a key factor and they will treat you like unsuccessful candidate just because you have it.
And what kind of mental illness does this girl have?

I don't know. It's not comfortable for me to ask such things. Moreover I wrote her appreciation letter about this phrase, but still no reply

Mental illness can be really subjective matter until it's proved by a psychiatrist

A lot of people live with mental illness and have no desire to visit psychiatrist. Sometimes people have not enough money for his services

I know very strange guy, he’s even dangerous. It seems he has some mental disease but they cannot prove it in order to isolate him.

Look at her muzzle! It's terrifying. I think this girl could make a career in a scary-movies film industry.

It's unethical to say such things because of her appearance. May be, according to Asian standards she is beautiful, how do you know?

Alan, I'm surprised by your words! Don't you think she may be reading this topic? I haven't seen your photo, you can be even a Hollywood star - this doesn't give you the right to judge others! She said to me she is diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and advised to visit their community http://community.livejournal.com/sg_mentalhealth

Anyway I won't apologize! Guys, we won't dispute about this cheap whore, will we? Don't attack me for calling her cheap whore, these are not my words, but hers You can look at: http://runny.livejournal.com/589933.htmlrape I told my therapist about the rape which happened when I was 16. I was too dazed to realize what was happening until he pushed me into the shady motel room and turned rough. I was a virgin. Was. After the ordeal, I was too ashamed to make a police report. He manipulated me cruelly, "It's not my fault. It's you who's stupid. Don't you dare tell the police. I'd tell them you enjoyed it. You're just a cheap whore!"

Guys it seems you went too far from initial question. There are many other forums to discuss sexual relations. Alan, don’t be so rude!

I agree with Simon, don't start offtopic here! Alan, you are a man and you can't imagine how much (not only physically, but psychologicall) woman suffers when she is raped. You don't know the details to make such conclusions.
Back to the topic: I think that sometimes mental illness is an engine which leads person towards success in science, art and writings. There are a lot of examples in world history.

Mental illness must be treated seriously in hospital. The author needs to have really strong personality to overcome mentall illness. Alan, nice joke about film industry

lots of people have mental illness i don't really know anyone is normal because i don't believe there is such a thing since the view of what normal is , is different between different people one person might see normal as one thing and someone might think what they think is normal is weird i have bipolar and paranoia and ptsd which is hard to deal with yes but the pain can be put into creativity i truely believe one of my favorites no my favorite writer of all time was manic depressive Edgar Allen Poe and it shows he was depressed but his work is amazing pain has a little beauty and gives those who have a window to deeper meanings in things that alot don't see with pain comes knowledge of the underbelly of life
