I’ve decided to post a poll.

I have a question regarding copyright law. I’ve written a story and put © after my name +year. Is it considered copyright?  I mean can I claim my rights as an author to that story? What if I post it on web and someone steals it and will make good money on it. Or maybe I need to register this story somewhere in relevant authorities? And if you think © is not enough what do I need to do to register it properly?

Any ideas?

The matter of copyright is very specific and is treated by lawyers in different way. I answered no because in your case you are the author of that story but the copyright you put has no legal power. So I’m afraid you cannot claim this copyright for example in court. It’s like putting © and claiming the copyright to something you’ve written on a fence IMHO   Smiley.

Well, generally the creator of work, i.e. the author is considered the holder of intellectual property rights. But this depends on your location, some countries respect copyright of other countries. I know quite informative website on US copyright law www.copyright.gov

As far as I know you cannot put or claim copyright to the “work made for hire”. For example if you are an employee and writing stories is a part of your job the copyright goes to your employer.  But if you are independent author and write on your own initiative I think you can protect your work by copyright. But merely putting © is not enough and I guess there should be some legal procedure for it.

I’m not a lawyer but you can try to ask this question on their forums.
